Inequalities in the environmental public health funding in the European region

Background and aim: Many societies in low- middle-income (LMICs) countries face increasing environmental challenges, while also have minimal capacities to monitor assess their impacts on population health, therefore inform decision making policy. The European Union (EU) has supported the research Environment Health (EH) for more than 3 decades through its Framework Programmes of Research Innovation, resulting over 500 projects, investing close €2 billion until 2020. aim was examine detail distribution such funding across region internationally, supporting EH capacities. Methods: An analysis EU Horizon 2020 (2014-20) carried out initially, assessing 269 funded projects linked EH, totalling €1.1 billion. by country, institution, coordination, provisions policy capabilities, how these changed overtime were examined domains (i.e. air pollution, urban climate change, Policy). Results: In all domains, majority coordination went just a handful (Spain, UK, Netherlands, Germany, France, Italy) institutions. Societal Challenges 1 (SC1) SC5, Scientific Excellence received 77%, Spreading Widening Participation aimed at building strengthening only 3% this funding. There little indication that contributed capacity LMICs. Conclusions: Inequalities remain stark persistent overtime.
